2023 marks the final year of the recognition period that began in 2019. For Fost Plus, it is a switch year, with a number of key objectives to be achieved and results that will serve as the basis for ambitions in the next five years. The local circular economy, with the blue bag as its cornerstone, is now really taking shape. With another increase in recycling rates, Belgium confirms its leading position. At the same time, ecological awareness is penetrating all layers of society. Citizens, government, industry - everyone has a role to play. Fost Plus wants to take that sustainable mindset further.

More key figures

The circular economy involves us all. That is because it starts when we sort our packaging. At home, in the kitchen, or also at work, at school or on the road. That is why our approach is focused on individual citizens more than ever. We want to make life - and sorting waste - as easy as possible for everyone.

How can we reduce litter? This is a big question and something everyone cares about. We all believe that things can and must be done better.

Companies will need to make their packaging more sustainable in the coming years. Recycling will continue to have an important role in this, but prevention and reuse are becoming just as important. Many companies are reviewing their packaging strategies and preparing to make major adjustments and investments. Fost Plus wants to help with this crucial transition.

The operating budget of Fost Plus in 2023 was 298.457.881 euro. Most of this budget is allocated to collection and sorting of household packaging. These are all the costs involved in moving materials from people’s homes to our recycling partners.

In 2024, we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of Fost Plus, and this will also be the first year of a new accreditation period. It is the perfect opportunity for a review, and also a look ahead with CEO Wim Geens and Chairman Jan Vander Stichele.
