Preface

The circular

packaging economy

as an answer to the

recycling issue

Despite the unusual times we are living in, Fost Plus remains on track to achieve its ambitious goals. In 2020, we have again taken some important steps in building a circular economy for household packaging.

The introduction of the New Blue Bag was launched at an accelerated pace. Today almost all Belgians are taking advantage of the extended PMD collection, providing an additional 90,000 tonnes of packaging for the recycling market.

In the meantime, construction has also continued on five new high-tech sorting centres, where this packaging is further sorted into high-quality recycling streams. By the end of this year, at least four of the five sorting centres will already be operating at full capacity.

Last year, we also laid the foundation for the final link in the chain: the development of recycling capacity on our own premises. In December, we already announced the first investments in three new recycling plants, while negotiations for further expansion are ongoing.

In doing so, we complete the circle: the packaging that we collect from Belgian consumers is given a new life in a local circular economy, as raw material for new products and packaging that are then put back on the Belgian market.

Halfway through our new accreditation period, we are ready to realise our ultimate ambition. As a driver of the circular economy, we will not only provide a recycling solution for every packaging item on the market, but also put Belgium in pole position to become a European recycling hub.

"We are proud that, even in a difficult year, we were able to meet our recycling targets."

It will not be a surprise to anyone that 2020 was also a year of great challenges for Fost Plus. The Covid epidemic had a significant impact on the daily activities of just about all sectors, both public and private. And that was no different for the recycling of household packaging.

Nevertheless, we can also speak of a successful year. Because despite the difficult circumstances, we managed to guarantee our essential services to citizens. Thanks to the flexibility and excellent cooperation with all our partners, door-to-door collection was never compromised.

We are also proud that, in a difficult year, we were able to improve our recycling rates again. We would also like to congratulate the consumers for this, because it is thanks to their continued commitment and their sorting efforts that we see these figures increase year after year.

It is the best proof that our strategy rests on solid foundations: a clear vision of the future, a realistic plan and the long-term commitment of the business community.

This solid basis also puts us in an ideal position to further increase our recycling rates in the coming years. Not just because we want to meet legal targets, but because we want to meet the expectations of citizens, governments and businesses.

We hope that in the coming years we can continue to count on the support of all our stakeholders: consumers and businesses, as well as our partners in the field, governments and policymakers. Only with their support can we further develop our project, which is unique in Europe, and make it successful.
